before filming started on the pursuit of happyness, smith spent a year and a half working as a social worker, a job that he says he hated. at the time, he was single and living in a cheap apartment. working as a social worker, he said, was a pretty great way to support himself. but the idea of working in social services — all the kids that come in that are like, ‘yo, my mom gave me a crack pipe, and i’m just going to have to kick it. can you just get me out of jail?’ — it was all this stuff that i’d have to go through, and it was just like, ‘why am i doing this?’
he was able to get a job with a film company, but he was still not making enough money to move out of his apartment. so he decided to use what little money he did have to pay his rent. he put down the deposit for his apartment, and his mother paid the rest. it was like, ok, i got a new apartment and im getting to work on a really cool movie, smith said. and then i was like, no, i gotta go back and get more money to pay the people who paid for my apartment, who paid for my food, who paid for my clothes. and i was like, if i stay here, i’m just going to be a waiter. and i was like, no, i gotta go back, im going to make movies.
and, as a result, the film industry was definitely the place for smith to be. it helped him make his way, and it certainly helped him get out of the projects that he was working on. i just wanted to show my son that the entire world is not made up of that, that the world is a place of opportunity, and that he could make it to the top. he’s not a quitter. he’s not going to give up, and it’s about setting a vision.
smith, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at the age of 18, is a happy man. and he said that chris gardner is also a happy man. smith called the relationship between his father and his real-life son one of the most inspiring stories he’s ever seen, and something he would like to emulate.
will smith is great in this role. an award-winning actor with a career full of well-liked and critically acclaimed performances, his best work to date has always been in indies. a man of great charisma, he can play the light-hearted action hero like no other, but he is also an expert at juggling the more difficult emotional beats as well. he is a man who can make a bad situation look good simply through a smile, and in this role, he does just that. and despite the film not being able to avoid the clichés of the genre, it does them well. but for a movie that has a strong, heartfelt message, it is a true joy to watch.
chris gardner spent 18 years of his life pursuing happiness. long after he lost the struggle, he kept on trying, at home, in life, in love. the pursuit of happyness is not just a film about a man trying to find the meaning of life, but a film about a family trying to find a way to live their lives. there is a lot to be said for those, and they are the reason for the film being nominated for so many academy awards.
gardner did not live to see the film that was shot in and around his old neighborhood, but his sons play his sons in the movie. a movie about a family, and about finding happiness, if ever there was a reason to go see it, this is it. the pursuit of happyness is for those who want to live their lives in a happier way.
